Media Coverage of the New Cracks in the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf
April 21, 2008
One of the major findings of the Ellesmere patrol was the discovery of a new network of cracks across the largest ice shelf in Canada, the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf at the northern extreme of Ellesmere Island. The cracks were first observed in satellite images and were mapped by members of the Canadian Rangers during the Ellesmere patrol. The continued breakup is causing concern for the future of Arctic ice shelves. Dr. Derek Mueller was recently interviewed by Bob McDonald on the CBC Radio program Quirks and Quarks about the breakup of the ice shelves and the findings of the Ellesmere patrol.
